As a general rule of thumb, Brody learned how to control his emotions, keep them from being on obvious display for the whole world to see. In his line of work, it was essential because if his face gave him away then he’d never be able to calm the patients or their loved ones first.

In a way, it made perfect sense, and he’d adopted the same method in his personal life, allowing himself to adapt accordingly. However, in spite of the many batshit crazy things he’d seen as a resident, as a doctor, and now as the head of ER, he could say, with absolute certainty, that Evie Rutherford was, by far, the most surprising person he’d ever met.

Yes, he already knew that she was a handful, a stray bullet ricocheting all over the place, and it hadn’t stopped him from asking Mila out because it hadn’t deterred him in the slightest. He believed everyone deserved a fair chance to prove their worth, regardless of their background, financial situation or family members.

Mila was no exception, and he thought he knew what to expect when it came to Evie. Not that he’d intended to run into her on the first date, that part he couldn’t have seen coming a while away. Still, he’d believed there was no harm in staying in the same place her sister was.

In fact, he was slightly curious about the younger Rutherford, wondering what she was like compared to her sister, and he hadn’t wanted to make Mila feel like there was anything wrong with her sister, or her by extension.

He knew all too well how people tended to judge an entire family based on one errant member, but he was determined not to make Mila feel that way. Besides, he was sure that she got enough of that already as it was. It was the last thing she needed.

Still, he hadn’t anticipated the chain of events Evie would set in motion.

He’d stood by while she hugged Mila and teased her, making her sister clearly uncomfortable, and he’d even schooled his expression into neutrality when she started talking about him while he was standing right there, but no amount of training, or any kind of mental pep talk prepared him for even the possibility that Evie would learn forward and pinch his ass.

If anything, he could hardly believe it, even now, a few minutes later. Mila’s mouth was still slightly agape, and she looked like she was about ready to die of embarrassment. She kept shooting him long regretful looks, as if he was going to walk out on her and leave her standing alone in the middle of the club.

Granted, he’d never dealt with anyone like Evie before, not on a personal level at least, but he wasn’t offended, not even a little bit. He was thoroughly amused, his mouth twitching slightly as he tried to reach for Mila’s hand.

She inched away from him, acting like she was afraid of the inevitable fallout from her sister’s careless actions.
